At the latest Kippax Parish Council meeting it was agreed to accept the quote of ?74,000 from Leeds City Council parks department and provide funding for a path at Kippax Common. Kippax Ward Councillors agreed to provide ?8,000 towards this cost.

On 28th April England?s first World Peace Flame Monument here in Garforth, Leeds, will be 9 years old. Unfortunately, the current housing for the lamp is too restricted for a new solar system to be housed adequately. So, on this 9th Anniversary our current Lord Mayor, Cllr. Dan Cohen, Local Councillors and local schools will unveil a new updated monument at approximately 11.30am.

2026-03-17 Gun Incident in Garforth

On Sunday evening police were called to reports of men fighting in Kennet Lane, Garforth. Officers, including armed response, attended after a gun was reported. A search of a vehicle at the scene recovered what turned out to be a BB gun. One man was arrested on suspicion of assault. Further checks led to a second man being arrested. Both are in custody as Leeds CID continue their investigation.

Garforth Town picked up their second home win in a week on Saturday with a well-deserved victory over Bradford Park Avenue. Owen Marshall capitalised when goalkeeper Campbell could only palm a header into his path on eleven minutes. Adam Haw equalised with his first chance of the match on twenty-six minutes to level it up going into the break. A Charlie Marshall double put the Miners into an unassailable lead, which rarely looked threatened.

Garforth recorded a deserved win on a cold Tuesday night at the Bannister Prentice Stadium. A couple of ricochets off players gave the Miners the opening goal on thirty-seven minutes. Consett?s first effort brought about an equaliser on fifty-four minutes. Substitute Mutty fired a low shot across the keeper and inside the far post for the winner.

Yorkshire Council is developing a Town Investment Plan (TIP) for Sherburn-in-Elmet as part of a regeneration programme across 32 towns in the County. The plans will help guide future funding bids, build communities and ensure funding is targeted to local priorities. Ashington took the lead on 56 minutes. A corner kick into the six-yard box wasn't dealt with, allowing Ryan Wombwell to head in at close range. On 64 minutes Ashington's Chris Reid was sent off for pulling back Aldrich after the centre-forward looked to have got clear. The battling visitors held on for a vital win in their fight against relegation, one which takes them three points clear of the drop.

2026-02-04 Jailed for 30 Months

A man was left with a fractured spine after angry thug Dale Day, 28, turned on him near Garforth railway station. The man tried to intervene when Dale Day was damaging fences on Aberford Road. Day kicked and punched the man repeatedly, before trying to push him into oncoming traffic, Leeds Crown Court heard. He was jailed for 30 months.

Network Rail said emergency services "safely dealt with" an incident in the Church Fenton area on Saturday afternoon. The incident blocked all lines between York and Leeds on Saturday morning.

Officers and Leeds City Council parking services attended Astley Lane, Swillington on Thursday to conduct speed checks and parking enforcement patrols which resulted in several individuals receiving words of advice on this occasion.

PCSO?s conducted School Streets parking patrols on the 28th January 2026 at Great Preston Primary School, following continued reports of individual breaching the local traffic regulation orders in place. Several tickets were issued to motorists found to be in breach of the order, and patrols will continue.

2026-01-30 Waste collection Scheme

From 13 January, Sherburn residents can pay for their licence for the 2026 garden waste collection service. A licence costs ?52 for collections between March and early December. The licence covers one 240-litre wheelie bin to be emptied fortnightly. Anyone who wants to have more than one bin emptied, will need to pay for a licence for each additional bin.

From 2nd March till 4th December a section of the Ridge Road over the railway bridge will be closed to traffic whilst the bridge is replaced to accommodate overhead cables on the rail track. Vehicles will be diverted via the A63 and A642 and the diversion will be clearly signposted.

Seven young students from Stagecoach Performing Arts Garforth and Wetherby have appeared in the latest series of Channel 5?s Animal Care Club, filmed at locations across Yorkshire. The children were selected to take part after submitting headshots and self-tapes, and went on to help care for pets, farm animals, wildlife and zoo animals. The successful students, aged 7-9 and from Garforth, Micklefield, Rothwell, Methley and Wetherby, assisted vets and animal carers at sanctuaries, wildlife centres and farms across the region learning first-hand how to care for animals while being part of a national TV production.

An inquest has been opened for a Sherburn sixth-form student who died in a crash between a car driven by a Leeds woman and a minibus carrying nine teenagers. Eleanor Hague, 16, died in the collision involving a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus and a Hyundai i10 car on Toulston Lane in Tadcaster on 1st December.

Garforth ended their away fixtures for 2025 with another stunning win. Dan Coupland got Town off to an early lead when he slotted home from the spot on fourteen minutes. 2025-11-11 Fruit Picker Accommodation Extension

Makins in Micklefield wants to continue using 84 static caravans at its Sturton Grange strawberry farm near Garforth. The company was first granted time-limited permission in 2009 to house mainly European fruit pickers who arrive in the UK under the Seasonal Worker visa scheme. The plans for the soft fruit farm to house up to 325 seasonal workers will go before a panel of councillors. If granted, a current planning application would allow use of the caravans for another six years at the Ridge Road farm.

Garforth stunned in-form Dunston with an excellent all-round performance, capped with some stunning strikes. Matt Savage put the Miners in front midway through the first half with a stunning volley from the edge of the box. 2025-11-06 Plane Crash at Sherburn Airport

A man in his 70s from the Leeds area has died in a plane crash involving a light aircraft at Sherburn Aero Club near Sherburn in Elmet just after 1pm on Sunday. The accident happened as the small plane landed on the runway. Police are currently guarding the scene and the Air Accident Investigation Branch has been informed.

Detectives investigating an altercation in Garforth in which a man died have charged a man with murder. Thomas Childe, 23, of Oak Crescent, Garforth, who defines as White British, has been remanded in custody to appear before Leeds magistrates on Tuesday 4th November.

2025-11-04 Second Man Arrested in Murder Enquiry

A 23-year-old Leeds man is currently in custody on suspicion of murder after being arrested in the local Garforth area on Friday, as part of continuing enquiries by the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team. The victim has been identified as Mr Colin Starbuck, aged 79, from Garforth. The police are appealing for witnesses.

A 79-year-old man was attacked in Aberford Road, Garforth, at 6.35pm on Wednesday, 29th October. He died later in hospital. An 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

2025-10-20 Plans for Recycling Centres

Proposals to revise the use of recycling centres to North Yorkshire residents to generate savings and improve access are set to be considered by councillors. Under new plans, owners of commercial-like vehicles would also be allowed up to 12 free visits a year to dispose of their own household waste at the county?s 20 recycling centres. If introduced, it is estimated to generate savings of up to ?405,000 per year and will improve access due to fewer visitors.

A group of people representing Yorkshire Ambulance Service, including Community Responders, Nurses and non clinical staff, were joined by Red Watch from Garforth Fire Station to help deliver CPR training to all year 8s at Garforth Academy. In total they trained around 285 students.

A cagey first half on Saturday ended goalless, but the home side upped their game after the break, with little reply from their West Yorkshire rivals. Luke Adrich clinically opened the scoring on fifty two minutes, following a neat exchange of passes with Charlie Marshall. Jamie Barkway prodded home (on sixty four minutes) from close range to double the lead, before Aldrich sealed the points with a calmly taken spot kick just five minutes later.

A new app, Start Safe, Stay Safe, has been launched to improve street safety in York and North Yorkshire. It offers a straightforward, and confidential way for members of the public to report street, town and city centre incidents. Police received a report at 4pm on Friday from the ambulance service who had found the body of a man at a property on Glencoe Gardens, between Kippax and Great Preston. Officers from Leeds District CID are investigating and have arrested two men and a woman on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs. The two men have also been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Garforth NPT did an operation with trading standards off the back of intel about counterfeit vapes and tobacco in shops in Garforth and Kippax this week. A good amount of illegal cigarettes and vapes were ceased.

Sherburn-in-Elmet Community Larder has secured a total of ?30,000 in funding to support its mission of alleviating food poverty in Sherburn-in-Elmet and surrounding villages. The funding includes ?20,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund and ?10,000 from North Yorkshire Council?s Household Support Fund.

2025-09-04 Elmet Lions Recycling Drive

Proactive volunteers at the Elmet Lions have helped save thousands of blister packs from landfill after a successful recycling drive. The team collected 13 enormous bags of the packs at their drop off point next to the Maltings Tea Rooms. The trial project was made possible thanks to a ?425 grant for the cost of the pallet collection box from the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust.

Crews from Castleford, Rothwell, Dewsbury, Hunslet, Garforth and Moortown attended a fire at commercial premises on Savile Road in Castleford on Tuesday 26th August at 7.50pm. A dance school near the building has been forced to temporarily close due to damage to its building.

The first meeting in LS25 in 28 years between these sides ended in a disappointing defeat for Garforth, condemning them to their first league loss of the season. Missed chances came back to haunt the Miners, as Jesse Gomez and Benjamin Shodeine punished them on the break in the final seven minutes.

North Yorkshire Council?s libraries are running a photography competition for children aged 7?11. Capture the natural world around you in North Yorkshire. The winning photos will be transformed into limited edition library cards used by members across the county. Upto 3 entries per child. The Miners progressed to the next round of the FA Trophy on Bank Holiday Saturday. Mutty opened the scoring on nineteen minutes, driving a low shot beyond the keeper. Rinor Ejupi doubled Garforth's lead midway through the second half with a half volley and George Harrison netting a third. Garforth will travel to Runcorn Linnets in the next round.

Micklefield Recreation Ground New Toddler Playground Official Opening took place on Saturday 30th August. Local MP, Keir Mather and two of the local ward councillors, James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council, and Mary Harland attended.

Kippax Community Pantry is changing on 30th August. Funding is getting harder to obtain so they are introducing a ?5 weekly membership for the 16 items of tinned and packet items.
